TAKE CONTROL OF ME Song lyric 037

Anyone can always turn over a new leaf.
If I did, I would never cause you any grief
We have serious business to discuss
So we must avoid creating any fuss.

Take control of me
Before I lose my grip.
Take control of me
Or I’ll start to slip.

You know, I really have to be discreet
Where we’re concerned personal matters when we meet,
I get to be so feverish under stress.
I’m uncontrollable when things are a mess.

TELL ME WHY YOU’RE CRTIN’ Song lyric 152

Tell me why you’re cryin’,
Cos I’ve done nothing wrong
Tell me why you’re cryin’,
Cos I’ve done nothing wrong.
You’ve been cheatin’ and lyin.
Get back where you belong.’

Tell me what you’re gonna do
When you’re on your own.
Tell me what your gonna do,
When you’re on your own.
You’ve done all you wanna do,
Now you’re all alone.

THE CROOKED MILE, TRACTION ENGINE,12 BORE SHOTGUN, AND THE FORD. Song lyric173

From the Crooked Billet Tavern athletes ran a crooked mile.
B.Y. started the race with a twelve bore shotgun blast.
Off down the cart-track and through the ford,
Up to the junction, left and left again past
The White Horse Inn as they turned round a school-field
And the pheasant hatcheries just beyond.
Down the slope, crossing the brook again further downstream,
Full circle up to the Green and the pond
Old Sam blew the steam traction-engine whistle
As the winners crossed the line.
This was the Annual bank-holiday event to attend.
A pint or two of ale, a pint or two of ale
Can accompany a spirit to ascend
For the Crooked Mile, up hill and down dale.

THE EMPTIEST ROOM, THE LONELIEST HEART. Song lyric 122

The emptiest room in the world,
The emptiest room ever known,
The emptiest room, no contents,
The emptiest room that we own.

The emptiest room that exists,
The empties room painted blue
The emptiest room, daylight or dark,
The emptiest room without you.

The loneliest heart in the universe,
The loneliest heart jammed in reverse.
The loneliest heart ever full of gloom,
The loneliest heart is from the emptiest room.

THE OBSTACLES Song lyric 066

It’s the obstacles to a brighter day
That confronts us when we roam away.
Hazards leave our work incomplete.
Intrusion is ancient and obsolete.

Hurdles and obstacles
Inhibit our progress,
Tendrils and tentacles
Drawbacks of an ogress.

Another blemish on our complexions
Impeding our intended connections,
Breakdowns on the journey’s wayside
Delay proceedings, looking undignified.

Leaving obstacles miles behind,
We scan ahead as landmarks remind
Us that the future is as brittle
As wafer thin gaze or an eggshell thin skittle

THE OFFICER AND THE SCULLERY MAID Song lyric 137

The officer and the scullery maid
Sought every opportunity
To consort in secret while they played
Outside their community.

Both oblivious to time and season
But sensitive to rhyme and reason
Enraptured in nature’s earthly ways,
Class distinction forgotten in halcyon days.

Affairs so innocent are still scandals
Among the bourgeois socialites.
Working folk are not all vandals,
Romance is a part of life in all lights.

THE QUARTERN LOAVES Song lyric 172

The wheat has been reaped as the night’s draw in.
The millstones have turned and the miller has loaded his cart.
The flour sacks wend their way to village bakeries.
Churches prepare for the Harvest festivals, displays are smart .
The master baker fires up his oven at dawn,
Mixes the dough by the hundred- weight load.
He weighs out the large loaves to stand and prove.
Next he produces double size four-pounder loaves.

An hour or two later, the trays are peeled in to bake,
Later, golden brown loaves are peeled out to cool.
Church wardens from each Parish call to collect..
These are exhibited with other produce in the vestibule
And the congregations celebrate harvest festival
With prayers and hymns giving thanks to the Creator.
Afterwards farm and garden fruit and vegetables
Are shared out amongst the old, needy and disabled later.

THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE, WITHOUT THE TRAPPINGS OF SUCCESS
Song lyric 163.

From isolated promontories to metropolitan throngs,
Citizens of all continents must listen to these songs.
Journeymen musicians transport themselves around
Plus instruments and equipment to generate the sound.
We’ve the tools of the trade without the trappings of success. X3
We’re trailblazers on the positive path to progress.

From studio technicians to live sound engineers.
Record company receptionists and administrative peers.
Lyricists and composers who only need a pen,
Reap rewards without performance in person but then………

When eyesores make their imprints and prosperity is denied,
Necessities take priority while luxuries aren’t supplied.
We tend to strive for essentials allied to our trade
And when we have succeeded, we have made the grade.

From royalty collection agencies to the music press,
Specialists in their own field who couldn’t care less.
Critics and observers anticipate what’s in store.
Musicologists and proofreaders really know the score.

THE TREACLE MINES OF COCK-A-DOBBY Song lyric 174

If you take a detour on the road to Surrey,
You may tarry or you may hurry.
You may find wayfarers to lobby
As you pass the treacle mines of Cock-a-Dobby.

In the Royal County of Berkshire, we’ve ghosts
Who haunt every town around here, Roger boasts.
There are writers with no other hobby
Who know the treacle mines of Cock-a-Dobby.

If you break a journey on the way to Reading,
You may not see which way you are heading.
You may encounter the spectre of Nobby,
The phantom of the treacle mines of Cock-a- dobby.

THERE’LL NEVER BE A NEXT TIME

I’ve just passed the place where we always meet
On the other side of the street
But last night I was left there alone’
Look what you’ve caused, we’re both on our own.

There’ll never be , no,no,no,no
‘’ ‘’ ‘’
‘’ ‘’ ‘’
There’ll never be a next time, girl

There was no reason to leave me there.
Now you have gone, you know I don’t care.
Think! I considered that you were shy’
Soon I will see you living a lie.

Once we’ve settled one dispute,
There’s no time to argue and fight
If we’d chosen another route,
We could have avoided bitter sweet spite..

THESE LITTLE PIECES OF PAPER Song lyric 031

Clues to forgotten times, puzzling me,
Jig-saws crumpled are a jumbled mystery.
I sit alone at home at night,
Piecing together the torn-up letters you used to write.

I salvaged these little pieces of paper,
Relics of the past, a ghostly vapour.
They remind me of quiet moments haunted
By your soul, yet your spirit is undaunted.

Useful keepsakes that I retrieved,
Evidence of your games that I had received.
More than once, they had been discarded.
Our secrets were so closely guarded.

THINK WISELY Song lyric 106

Think wisely, think clearly.
Speak coherently, speak sincerely.
Act charitably, act graciously.
Walk confidently, walk vivaciously.
Tread carefully, tread with caution.
Think thoroughly, think in proportion.

Plenty of points over which to ponder,
While subconsciously growing fonder.

Think sensibly, think seriously,
Dream sweetly, dream deliriously.
Drift contentedly, drift aimlessly.
See realistically, see painlessly.
Listen independently, listen with attention.
Think rapidly. Think with intention.

THIRD TIME LUCKY Song lyric 025

The first time around didn’t last very long.
After a while things started going wrong.
Wicked woman, she told me bare-faced lies.
My consolation was winning second prize.

Circumstances altered, the situation changed.
Once again her ladyship was rearranged.
Now I must settle down when I’m reassured.
My permanent confidante will get me cured.

It’s third time lucky, well matched.
Third time lucky for me.
She’s glad that she’s become attached.
I’m so glad that she’s my number three.

THIS HURT REMAINS Song lyric 113

I keep trying to forget,
But this hurt remains
Yet this hurt remains.
I’m feeling frantic and I fret
But this hurt remains
Yet this hurt remains.

Deep inside the pain lingers.
Time is slipping through my fingers.
I’m too desolate to console
But this hurt remains in my soul.

I have managed since you left
As my note explains,
As my note explains.
I’m feeling burnt out and bereft.
As my note explains,
As my note explains.

TILT THE QUILT, SWANSDOWN Song lyric 075

We’ll tilt the quilt.
We’ll tilt the quilt.
We’ll tilt the quilt.

Soft as swansdown,
Warm as toast.
Cosy, rosy ,
Holy Ghost.

Soft as swansdown,
Nice as pie
Tiny, shiny
Friday cry!

TO DELAY THE DISMAY Song lyric 123

You say that we’re going all the way
To experience the pain.
It’s fair to delay the dismay
And see love go down the drain.

Let’s not rush or grow frantic,
Our relationship will improve.
A split is always so unromantic.
Mistakes linger in the groove.

I say that we can move far away
Beyond the Spanish Main.
It’s fair to delay the dismay
And see love go down the drain.

TO PROVE YOUR FIDELITY Song lyric 061

Having had faith in you and losing it through
Hard facts of reality,
I am facing the news knowing that it’s true,
I feel that trust needs a guarantee.

I’ll still take you to France to give you a chance
To prove your fidelity.
You’re taking a stance. I can tell at a glance.
You like a separate identity

Looking back at the past, we have made it last
Longer than I would have thought.
If the pace were too fast, I’d soon be outclassed
You know you would never get caught.

It’s not so strange, if we made a change
By such lessons we’ve been taught
So let’s quit the grange and let me arrange
This trip as a last resort.

What means more than fire is my desire
To salvage what remains.
I am aiming much higher .cause you’re a live wire
That’s bound to cause aches and pains.

Because of my faith in you that admittedly grew
Fed by tears stormy rains.
Deep inside I knew from the short straws that I drew
That love is what your soul contains.

TRAITOR Song lyric 013

Marvel at the traitor,
She wouldn’t see me later.
She has left me and gone away.
Now she can’t bear to hear me say
That she’s a traitor.

Abandoned through deceit,
I’m aware that she’s a cheat.
The treachery that she planned
Makes me fully understand
Why she’s a traitor.

If I could honestly say,
I loved her more today,
More than any other day.
Then she would laugh
And carry on her way,
Leaving me in defeat.
I’m dismayed to know
That she’s a cheat. Copyright 1965 Arthur J.P. Strand

TRANSPARENCY Song lyric 146

Not contiguous to remoter components,
Clear glass, Clear glass, transparency, Son and daughter,
Cling film, cellophane became all too clear,
Crystal and ice and cool, clear water.

So fastidious in preparing telescopes,
Clear glass, Clear glass, transparency, son and daughter.
Meticulous binoculars and other lenses
Deep lakes and pools and cool, clear water.

We see in the cold light of day
Right through the things you do and say
In this fickle society, committee and panel
Try to fob us off with a load of old flannel.

TWO SIDES TO A STORY Song lyric 118

Am I being held to ransom
Fro being smart and looking handsome?
Am I just another fool,
Soft in the head instead of cool?

There are two sides to every story told,
One blowing hot, the other blowing cold.

Are you tempted to take me for a ride
Then screw me around and beat me up inside?
Am I now your latest game,
Hunting me down because I’m lame?

There are two sides to every story told,
One blowing hot the other blowing cold.
