A BALLAD OF BERKSHIRE BROOMDASHERS Song lyric 177

Broom=dashers Three once dwelt in a cot.
Keeping hens for their eggs, some for the pot
Fighting cocks were kept for laying bets down.
‘Twas an half-hour cart-ride into town.

These simple country-folk of Wessex, though few,
Oft enjoyed samples of the local brew,
Breaking the rules because no-one was there,
Back on the heath the world could not care.

Besom brooms, cut from birch and ash,
Were the main products that kept them in cash.
Each year would come, each year would go,
For five generations as far as I know.

For two hundred years they lived here half-wild,
Braving the elements each adult and child.
There are few who recall them in local folk- lore.
Their descendents may enlighten you more.

A MARINER’S YARNS OF VIRGINITY Song lyric 171

From Chesterfield, North Derbyshire
A seasoned mariner arrived,
With myths and legends, tales and yarns
On which many an audience has thrived.
He spoke of Chesterfield’s renowned church,
With a crooked spire that leans
And when a virgin is married therein,
The crooked spire straightens say parsons and deans.

In Portsmouth City, in commercial Road,
The Guildhall stands proud and serene.
Our mariner knows the naval town well
And recalls the civilian night scene.
Stone sculptures of two lions guard the steps
And the wenches who pass, according to folk-lore,
May not notice much out of the ordinary.
Yet, when a virgin passes those stone lions roar.

In France, they maintain, virgins are sixteen years old.
In Italy, much younger, oh Lord.
The mariner quoted this state of affairs
In saloons and bars on his travels abroad
The only virgins in Arabia, he said
Were camels that could run much faster
At the caravanserai than their riders,
Who ignore or disobey the camel train’s master.

A RETROGRADE RESULT Song lyric 132

To head a consultative group
Working on special cases
Had been a responsible task
But everyone knew their places

In offices of administrators
Failure was deemed an insult.
The moguls of establishment
Returned a retrograde result.

Progress was hampered
By a competitive rival.
A step back in time was the only way
To ensure survival.

A THOUSND PRAYERS Song lyric 050

Promises of a thousand prayers.
I leave behind my woes, my cares.
In pursuit of the future’s truth
Sacrificing the best of my youth.

Verdant meadows and salad days,
Pleasant times from a bygone phase.
To enter the next stage of life,
We cast aside the weapons of strife.

Country cousins meander through
Regardless of the city news,
Oblivious of all time and place,
Uninvolved in the mad rat-race.

Peaceful people run around town,
Making money, each behind a frown.
Intact within each cosy cocoon,
Such sheltered lives seem so immune.

ALL MY WASTED TIME Song lyric 069

Making such a hasty retreat
From a world of hypocrisy and lies,
We’ve slaved with bricks and concrete
Building futures, working in disguise.

I count all my wasted time,
From the ridiculous to the sublime.

Working to feather bureaucrats’ nests,
Investing our own capital, a risk
We’ve jeopardised our own interests
Our livelihoods traded for an obelisk.

ALTERNATIVE IDENTITY Song lyric 088

A face, an angry face, displaying nothing but wrath
Confronted a minion and stated reasons for this ire.
This spasm peaked like roaring tongues of flame
Subsiding to embers and ashes of a dying fire.

A face, a smiling face now smiling some moments later
Enraptured in pleasantry, all sombre thoughts cast aside.
This expression may not linger for events should interrupt
And Happy face must change and reset as fates decide.

A face, an older face, wistful and volumes wiser,
Bearing traces of distant youth as millions have before,
Representing common characteristics from all ages,
The alternative identity conjures up false images.

AMARYLLIS Song lyric 128

No other blooms, no other flower
Strikes the eye and sticks in the mind
Like the amaryllis.
No other bulb, no other power
Commands a view and shows its kind
Like the amaryllis.

Nothing on earth, nothing else I know
Defies description, superlative,
Like the amaryllis.
Nothing around, nothing else on show.
Claims first prize,
Does the amaryllis.

ANGUISH AFTER AGONY Song lyric 059

Anguish after agony,
Anguish after agony.
Staving off antagonists
Kept me pre-occupied
While the havoc still persists,
Pressure has intensified.

Sadistic intentions
Of those inflicting painful wounds so deep
Results of their inventions,
Evil and malicious thoughts they keep.

ANOTHER TRUCK IN THE LOADING BAY Song lyric 157

Another weekend I must collect my pay,
Saving up for a rainy day
Slaving with patience and concentration,
The money is the only consolation.

Another truck in the loading bay,
Another consignment to stack away,
An order has undergone an alteration,
It’s bound for a different destination.

All through the winter we must brave bad weather
All traffic congestion and hazards together,
Full tank of diesel and he open road
We are in delivery mode.

I’m the driver’s mate and the loading hand,
People just don’t understand.
I’m the driver’s mate and the loading hand.
Jobs don’t always go the way they’re planned.

APPREHENSIVE Song lyric 138

Bursting with pleasure and delight,
Enthusiastic about tonight,
Anticipating minor damage,
You’re apprehensive about your image.

Shining, radiant and aglow,
Extra dynamic, you go with the flow,
While disregarding social importance,
You’re apprehensive about performance.

Breaking down your inhibitions,
Barriers and adverse conditions,
Prepared to accept the consequences,
Your apprehensive about references.

AROMA THERAPY Song lyric 168

Choices of alternative treatments for ailments of body and soul
Bewilder free spirits who seek relief from aches, pains and colds.
Herbal mixtures or geothermal immersion may help reassure,
Acupuncture or conventional methods can be a comfort but not be a cure.

Senses five when you thrive, stay alive survive
Don’t deprive yourself but revive your drive.

Consider aversion therapy to combat common phobias and fears,
Spiritualists and faith-healers accept challenges throughout their careers.
Touch and taste, sight and sound, functions of the sensory nerves
The sense of smell when triggered can alert the body’s reserves.
